The Palio in Siena is very ancient, some documents speak about it in the XII Century. When Siena became one of the most rich city in Europe, the Palio was a very important event for the city. Probably, at the beginning, nobles were the key players but, at a certain point, they decided to designate a jokey. The horse run grown into a famous event.
Only in 1656 it was decided to run the Palio in Piazza del Campo which became the symbol of this horse run.
In addition to the historical centre of the city, there are a lot of villages to visit near Siena, such as San Gimignano, Asciano or Castelnuovo Berardenga that fascinate thousands of tourists every year.
