One of the most interesting stuff of a holiday in Tuscany is the food tradition. Actually Tuscany is one of the richest region in Italy in delicacy, like the “pasta” or the “Chianina” steak and cakes, especially traditional Christmas sweets.
The strong points of Tuscany are not just the marvellous landscapes and cities of art but also wine and gastronomy, and that’s the reason why thousand and thousand of tourists, visit that region every year. But we want to tell you about traditional Christmas sweets which are made in Siena: Ricciarelli and Panforte.
Ricciarelli are a sort of pastry very similar to marzipan, cooked with almonds, eggs, sugar and candied oranges. You can find them all over the year in Siena’s bakeries but each Italian family has a box of Ricciarelli at Christmas lunch.
Even Panforte is a traditional Christmas cake cooked with almonds, orange, lemon and spices, that’s the reason why in the past just apothecary could prepare it. Once was called “Panpepato” because was covered by pepper but, when Queen Margherita visited Siena, somebody decided to make some changes in the recipe. So melon was removed and the pepper was substituted by powdered sugar.
